AA-5B Tiger
The 180-hp flagship — produced 1975–1979 by Grumman American and Gulfstream American. 1,323 built.
The AA-5B Tiger was born when Grumman put aerodynamicist Roy LoPresti to work on the AA-5 Traveler. The result was a redesigned cowling, larger fuel tanks, aerodynamic cleanup of the gear fairings, and a Lycoming O-360-A4K producing 180 hp — 30 more than the Traveler. The Tiger immediately became the most popular variant in the AA-5 line and remains the most sought-after on the used market today. Features bonded aluminum honeycomb construction, sliding canopy, fixed tricycle gear with castering nosewheel, and handling owners consistently describe as sports-car responsive. 14-volt electrical system compatible with most legacy and modern avionics. For differences between the AA-5B and the later AG-5B, see the AG-5B Tiger page.
